Why Your Morning Sets Your Nervous System
Full transcript
Your eyes open. Before your feet touch the floor, your hand is already on your phone. And by the time you sit up, you already know the news, the weather, and who's angry about what today. Your day didn't start. It started for you. I'm Fernanda. I've been an energy healer for over twenty years, and the first question I ask a new client isn't about their pain. It's about their mornings. So in the next few minutes, I want to show you why your first few minutes decide so much. And the one-minute practice I do before I let my phone anywhere near me. One thing first. This is a complementary practice. It sits alongside your doctor, never instead of them.
Here's what I've come to believe, after twenty years of watching people arrive. Your nervous system is always listening. Am I safe? And it asks that question hardest in the first few minutes of the day, before you've decided anything on purpose. So when the phone is the first thing you meet, with the messages and the news and everything unfinished from yesterday, your nervous system gets its answer fast. And the answer is no. Nothing is actually wrong. Too much just arrived, too soon, before your body had a say. So the tone gets set before you've even stood up. And it can carry for hours. Modern life doesn't slow down to let you catch up. It's busy, it's overwhelming, and there's rarely a built-in pause. So if you don't take one, most days you won't get one.
In my room, I notice this every week. People come in already braced, shoulders up near their ears. And when I ask about their morning, it's almost always the same story. Straight to the phone, straight into everyone else's day. That bracing doesn't ask permission. It just carries into the first conversation, the first meeting, before lunch even arrives. So of course by the afternoon they're worn out. They never actually arrived in their own day. They arrived in everybody else's.
Here's what I've learned changes that. Setting an intention, first thing, before anything else gets in. I do this myself, every morning. Just enough so the day goes well. Or so it doesn't go as badly as I expected. The elements need to know exactly what you're looking for. So I ask them plainly. If you're drawn to the sun, ask the sun to give you strength for the day. If you're more drawn to water, ask the water in your shower to wash away the night. Everything you don't want to carry into the day. If you're more an earth person, ask the ground for soil to stand on, and for the strength to face whatever the day brings. Either one works. The point isn't which element. The point is that you asked.
But before any of that, grounding comes first. Grounding is bringing your attention out of your head and down into your body. Connecting your body into Mother Earth. It's the first step to protect your energy, so use a softer word if that suits you. Your attention. Your calm. Feet on the floor. That's it to start. Feel the weight of you there. Then picture roots growing out of your feet, deeper and deeper, all the way to the center of the earth. Let the ground hold you. The same way the chair holds you when you finally sit down after a long day. Once you're grounded, you become one with your thoughts, your beliefs, and your body. The tension starts to release, and the breath comes easier. Repeat it the same way you brush your teeth, and it becomes second nature. That's really the whole secret. Call it grounding. Or call it one minute of attention before you stand up. Same thing, different words.
Here's the honest version of my mornings, because it's smaller than people expect. Most days, with kids in the house, I get five minutes. Sometimes less. And five minutes is enough. It doesn't matter how long. It matters the intention you set. I do this because I know my own pattern. My chest tightens first, before I even notice I'm anxious. This one minute catches it before it grows. And I always end with gratitude. One thing. Being able to breathe the air. Feeling the sun on my skin. Something small. It tells your brain something important. That not everything today is going to be hard.
So here's the one-minute version. Right where you are, sitting on the edge of the bed. Feet on the floor. Feel the weight of you there. Picture your roots, going down, down, into the earth. Now one long breath. In. And out, longer than it came in, like the tide going out. Say one intention, in your own words. Just a sentence. This is the day I choose to be steady. Or whatever is true for you. Now name one thing you're grateful for. Just one. That's it. Now you can pick up your phone. One minute. And you met the day before the day met you.
Do this most mornings, and you'll notice the difference. Not every day. Most of them. If you'd like to go deeper, I've put my ten-day journey together. It's called The Nature Reset. The link is below. And there's a link to book a gentle session too. In person, in the Lower Mainland, or from anywhere. Your nervous system asks the same question every morning. Am I safe? Now you have an answer to give it. I'm Fernanda. Come as you are.
Would you like Fernanda to guide you herself? Sessions are online from anywhere, or in person in the Lower Mainland, BC. Or start with the ten-day audio course.
