What Is Reiki, Without the Mystical Explanation
In short
Fernanda explains that Mikao Usui developed Reiki in Japan in the 1920s, so it has a name and a date. For her it's attention, energy, and a body that's finally allowed to slow down. She uses her hands, her attention and a lot of quiet, as one tool inside her grounding, breath and release work. People feel it differently. Some feel warmth or tingling, some cry, some feel nothing at all. You don't need to believe in it, she says, only be willing to notice what happens.
- In her room, most people leave lighter than they came in.
- For her, energy is the vibration of each organ; tension works fine as a softer word.
- People may feel warmth, tingling, calm, sleepiness, tears, or nothing, and all of it is okay.
- You do not need to believe in it, only be willing to notice what happens.

Someone holds a hand a few inches above your shoulder. You feel warmth spreading down your arm, before they've even touched you. Or maybe you feel nothing at all, and you start to wonder if you're doing it wrong. Maybe your hands go warm, or your eyelids get heavy, and you didn't tell your body to do any of that. We'll get to why. I'm Fernanda. I've been an energy healer for over twenty years. Reiki is the very first thing people ask me about, right after they ask if I think they're strange for coming. People come to me both ways. Some have already seen ten other healers. Some think the whole thing is nonsense and just want to see for themselves. So today, I want to explain what Reiki actually is, without the mystical language. One name behind it, what I believe happens in the room, and a one-minute practice at the end. It doesn't matter if you believe it or not. One thing first. This is a complementary practice. It sits alongside your doctor, never instead of them.
Let's start with the word everyone trips over. Energy. For me, energy is the vibration and the frequency of each organ. Nothing spookier than that. When I work on someone, I can feel the density of the air change, right where something is stuck. So call it energy. Or call it tension, or a knot in your shoulder that's been there since March. We're talking about the same thing. Which means everyone feels it differently. Some people feel warmth right away. Some feel nothing for months, and that's okay too. I couldn't feel as much when I started either. It grows with practice, the same way any sense does. Nobody's measured that with a machine, as far as I know. But I feel it, every single day, in the room.
So what actually happens in a session. Your body is a home with many rooms. A session is just opening the windows, one at a time. A man named Mikao Usui developed it, in Japan, in the 1920s. So it's not some vague ancient secret. It has a name and a date. I like that it has a name and a date. It means you can look it up tonight, if you want to. That was about a hundred years ago. People still come in for the same reasons. When people call it mystical, I think what they mean is unfamiliar. Those aren't the same thing. You don't need to picture anything mystical. Think of it more like a slow, gentle check-in with your whole body. For me, Reiki is one tool inside my energy work, or my tension work, if that word sits easier with you. I use my hands, my attention, and a lot of quiet. I don't do it on its own. It sits inside everything else I do: the grounding, the breath, the release.
That's why I say this to every skeptic who sits down in my room, and I mean every word of it. It doesn't matter if you believe it or not. What matters is that this is a safe space for you to work on yourself. Some of my closest friends don't believe in any of what I do. We still love each other just fine. So you don't need faith to lie down on my table. You just need to be willing to notice what happens.
In my room, I notice this again and again. Not what people expected to feel. Just what happened. Warmth. Or a tingling in their hands or their feet. A calm that arrives without asking permission. Sometimes sleepiness, right there on the table. Sometimes tears, for no reason they can name. And almost always, they leave lighter than they came in. None of that means something is wrong. It usually means something that was stuck is finally moving. Sometimes they just want to talk more than usual, or go quiet altogether. That's the release moving too. So some feel all of that. Some feel one small thing. Some feel nothing at all, and I tell them that's okay too. It doesn't make the session less real. It just means you feel it in your own way.
So let's try one minute of it, right now, wherever you're sitting. Close your eyes if that feels right. Or just let your gaze go soft. Let the chair hold you. The same way it holds you at the end of a long day. Put one hand on your chest, or your belly. Whichever feels more like home. Really feel it. Don't rush this part. Just notice. Warmth, or heaviness, or nothing much. All of it is information. Now breathe out longer than it came in. Like the tide going out. One more like that. In. And out, longer, like the tide. That's it. That's the whole practice. You didn't have to believe a word I've said for that to happen.
For me, Reiki is attention, energy, and a body that's finally allowed to slow down. Believe it, doubt it, or just stay curious. All three are welcome in my room. It doesn't matter if you believe it or not. What matters is that you gave yourself one minute. If you want more of this, I've put my ten-day journey together. It's called The Nature Reset. The link is below. I would love to walk that with you, whichever door you choose. And if you'd rather have me guide you myself, there's a link to book a gentle session too. In person, or from anywhere. You don't have to believe anything for this to work. You just have to show up, and let your body do the rest. I'm Fernanda. Come as you are.
Would you like Fernanda to guide you herself? Sessions are online from anywhere, or in person in the Lower Mainland, BC. Or start with the ten-day audio course.
