Why You Can't Switch Your Mind Off at Night
In short
Fernanda explains that your nervous system asks one question all day: am I safe? When the answer has often been no, the body doesn't know the day is over just because you lay down. Quiet is the first moment nothing else is louder, so the list you carried all day finally gets heard. Her answer is a slow breath out, longer than the breath in. For her, that tells the body one clear thing: the danger has passed.
- The worry list does not start at night; it just finally gets heard in the quiet.
- Nothing is broken. Your mind is simply still on watch.
- She likes square breathing: in for four, hold, out for four, hold, and repeat.
- Counting gives the mind somewhere to go other than the list.

The light goes off. And that's exactly when the list starts. Not before. The moment the room goes quiet, every worry that waited all day walks in and sits on the edge of the bed. I'm Fernanda. I've been an energy healer for over twenty years, and my own chest still tightens some nights before I remember what to do about it. So in the next few minutes I want to show you why your mind won't switch off at night, and what actually tells your body it's safe to. Then two minutes you can do right there in bed. One thing first. This is a complementary practice. It sits alongside your doctor, never instead of them.
Here's what I think is actually happening. Your nervous system is always listening. Am I safe? That's not dramatic. It's just how the body has always kept us alive. All day long it's asking that question. Notifications, traffic, a hard conversation, a deadline. And too often, the honest answer has been no. Modern life doesn't help. So much information, so many notifications, and no real time to settle. So when you finally lie down, your body doesn't know the day is over. It only knows the answer was no, again and again. Nothing is broken here. Your mind is simply still on watch.
In my room, I hear the same story from so many people. The body is exhausted. The mind won't stop. And it's almost always the same time. Three in the morning. Wide awake, for no reason they can name. It doesn't have to be something big. A meeting that went fine. A message you already answered. The list doesn't rank by size. Call it energy if you want, or call it tension. Either word is fine with me. What matters is you notice where it sits. Quiet is where the feelings live. Not because they weren't there all day. It's just the first moment nothing else is louder. During the day there's too much happening for it to surface. So it waits. Quiet is where it finally has the room to show up.
So the list doesn't start at night. It just finally gets heard. Here's the part I trust, because I've lived it. When my chest starts tightening, when the anxiety kicks in, I used to just explode. I'd go straight to the extreme. It took me years to notice that pattern before it took over. You don't need years. You just need to notice it tonight. Now I notice it earlier, in my body. And I slow my breath down. Breathe out longer than it came in, like the tide going out. Every single time, something shifts. Even my brain stops complaining. There's real science in that, and I like saying it plainly. The slow breath, the extra oxygen, calms the nervous system down. And the body reads one clear signal. The danger has passed. Remember, your nervous system is always listening. The breath is simply how you answer it. Rest isn't falling behind. It's how your nervous system finally learns the danger has passed.
The breath that works for me sometimes doesn't work for you. So I teach a few, and you choose. Square breathing. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Hold for four. Easy to remember, even at midnight. Or this one. In for four. Hold for five. Out for six. The longer exhale is the part doing the real work. Counting gives your mind somewhere to go, other than the list. That's most of the trick. I use this with my own kids too, when their heads won't settle at bedtime either. Pick whichever one your body likes tonight. There's no wrong choice here. And if you want a small ritual, here's one I actually do myself. A little salt by the bed at night, asking it to clear my body of anything that doesn't serve me. Optional, but it's mine, and I like it.
Before you go, here's the two minutes I actually want you to try tonight, right where you're lying. Let the bed hold you. The same way it holds you every single night, whether you notice it or not. Close your eyes if that feels right. If not, that's fine too. Let your feet get heavy. Or your heels, if that's easier to feel. Just heavy, like they're sinking a little. Feel the weight of the blanket. That's real, and it's yours right now. Now breathe with me. In. Four, three, two, one. Hold. And out, longer. Six, five, four, three, two, one. Like the tide going out. One more. In, four, three, two, one. And out, six, five, four, three, two, one. There's no rush here. Let each breath be a little longer than the last. Whatever you're carrying tonight, hand it over. Down your arms, out of your palms, into the earth beneath the house. Mother Earth has held mountains for millions of years. Tonight is not too heavy for her. Last thing. Name one thing you're grateful for today. Just one. That's it. Let your eyes close whenever they're ready.
Do that most nights, and your body starts to learn something new. The day is over. It's safe to stop listening now. If you'd like more of this, I've put my ten-day journey together. It's called The Nature Reset. The link is below. And if you'd rather rest and let me do the work, there's a link to book a gentle session too. In person, or from anywhere. Your nervous system is always listening. Tonight, let the answer finally be yes. I'm Fernanda. Come as you are.
Would you like Fernanda to guide you herself? Sessions are online from anywhere, or in person in the Lower Mainland, BC. Or start with the ten-day audio course.
