Salt by Your Bed for Protection? Why I Do It, Explained
Full transcript
Salt by your bed for protection. You've probably seen it this week, and you're wondering if it actually does anything. The short answer is this. For me, it helps, and it helps because of what you ask it. The ask is the ritual. I'll show you why, and at the end there's a small practice for tonight, at bedtime. I'm Fernanda. I've been an energy healer for over twenty years, and a little salt by my bed at night is something I really do. One thing first. This is a complementary practice. It sits alongside your doctor, never instead of them.
So the first thing is the ritual itself, in one sentence. Before going to bed, you put a little bit of salt beside the bed, and you ask it for something. This time of year, around Halloween, a lot of people are looking for it. For me, salt by the bed is about something much more ordinary. The heaviness of the day. In my sessions, I often say it. People carry too much, and they don't release enough. They accumulate all those feelings, all the experiences they didn't manage. They hold it in their body, and at night, they take all of it to bed. Call it energy, or call it tension. Either way, it's what you didn't put down.
So why salt? I read a little about this, and two things stayed with me. The first one is simple. Salt is one of the oldest ways people have kept food from spoiling. Before fridges, salt kept things good. So it makes sense to me that people came to trust it as something that protects. The second one is from Japan. Before a sumo bout, the wrestlers throw a handful of salt into the ring. It comes from Shinto, the old tradition of Japan, and the salt is there to purify the ring. So that's the history. Salt keeps things good, and salt clears a space. Which brings me to why I use it.
For me, salt is earth. It's a mineral, a little piece of the ground. And when you put salt and water together, you have the sea. For me, water is cleansing, re-energizing, releasing. Swimming in the ocean, pretty much every day, has always been part of my life. Every time I was stressed, after swimming, I felt rejuvenated. Full of energy again, and lighter. I do believe we came from earth, the minerals, the water. We carry that history, millions of years of earth inside our bodies, and we don't even realize it. Our bodies are made of the same water and minerals. So when I ask the salt for help, I'm asking something I'm made of.
Now the part that matters most. The salt on its own is just salt. The elements need to know exactly what we are looking for, and what we want them to do. So the salt holds the place. The ask is the ritual. Before going to bed, I put a little bit of salt beside the bed, and I ask the salt to clear my body from everything that doesn't serve me. Name it out loud. It's how our brain absorbs the information, and it allows us to release. You can use your own words. Clear everything I don't want to carry. Everything that happened today that I don't want to carry on. It doesn't matter how long. It matters the intention you set. Hold on to that ask, because we're going to use it in the small practice at the end.
Protecting your energy, or your calm if that word fits better, does not mean building a wall. For me, protection starts with grounding. Grounding comes first. You can't protect what you can't feel. So before the salt, I bring my attention out of my head and down into my body. And fear has no place in it. Your nervous system is always listening. Am I safe? A ritual that frightens you tells your body no. A ritual that calms you tells it yes, you can rest now. And if you don't believe in any of this, that's fine. A lot of my friends don't believe in a lot of what I do, and we all have to respect each other. Then call it a small pause. The moment at the end of the day when you decide to put the day down. Somewhere between my definition and yours, that pause is real.
So here is the small practice. About two minutes, tonight, at bedtime. Put a little bit of salt in a small bowl or a glass, and set it beside your bed. The salt you already have in the kitchen is enough. Sit on the edge of the bed, feet flat on the floor. Ground first. Feel roots growing out of your feet, deeper and deeper, reaching the center of the earth. Now ask the salt, out loud. Mine is this. Clear my body from everything that doesn't serve me. Take a deep breath in. Four, three, two, one. Hold. And let go, longer than it came in, like the tide going out. One more time. In. Four, three, two, one. Hold. And out. With every breath, let go of everything that doesn't serve you. Now lie down, and let your body be held. Let the bed hold you, the same way the chair holds you when you finally sit down after a long day. Before you sleep, name one thing you're grateful for. Just one. In the morning, let the salt go, and start fresh that night.
That's all it is. A little bit of salt, your attention in your body, and one ask, said out loud. If you'd like to go deeper, I've put my ten-day journey together. It's called The Nature Reset. The link is below. And there's a link to book a gentle session too. In person, or from anywhere. So tonight, keep it small and keep it kind. The salt holds the place. The ask is the ritual. I'm Fernanda. Come as you are.
Would you like Fernanda to guide you herself? Sessions are online from anywhere, or in person in the Lower Mainland, BC. Or start with the ten-day audio course.
