Why You Feel Drained After Talking to Certain People

In short

Fernanda says your nervous system reads other people all the time. It picks up their tension and gets ready as if it were yours. So after some conversations you're carrying their stress in your own shoulders. In her view, energy also moves between people, and some people take without meaning to. Her answer is to ground before and after, ask yourself whether a feeling is really yours, and hand the heaviness to the ground. She never tells anyone to cut people off.

You hang up the phone. Nothing bad happened. And you feel like you've just run a marathon. Some people leave you full. Some people leave you empty. And it's rarely about what was said. I'm Fernanda. I've been an energy healer for over twenty years, and this is the question I get asked more than any other. Why do certain people drain me, and what do I do about it? So let's talk about it. What's really happening, how to protect your energy without cutting people off, and what to do in the two minutes after a draining conversation. One thing first. This is a complementary practice. It sits alongside your doctor, never instead of them.

You know the ones. The friend who only calls to unload. The colleague whose mood fills the whole room. The family member you brace yourself for before you've even said hello. Afterwards you're heavy. Foggy. Sometimes a bit sad, and you can't say why, because nothing sad happened to you. And if you're a sensitive person, it's stronger. Crowded places wear you out. You feel the room before anyone speaks. You go home and need an hour alone to come back to yourself. Some of the strongest people I know are the ones who feel the most. They just never learned where to put it.

Here's what I believe is happening, and I'll give you the everyday version and my version. The everyday version. Your nervous system reads other people. All the time, without asking you. A tense voice, a heavy mood, a person who needs something. Your body picks it up and gets ready, as if it were yours. So by the end of the call, you've been carrying their stress with your muscles. No wonder you're tired. My version. For me, everything is energy, and it moves between people. Some people give. Some people, without meaning to, take. When I work with someone who has spent the week around a taker, I can feel the heaviness on them before they say a word. Both versions land in the same place. What you're feeling after those conversations is often not yours. And that changes everything, because you can put down what isn't yours. And your sensitivity? That's information. It tells you who fills you and who empties you. Trust it. It's been right all along. And one thing I've learned from twenty years of sensitive people. The ones who feel the most are usually the ones everyone leans on. The listener. The one who is always there. You get drained because you're good at it.

Now, protecting your energy does not mean building a wall. I've never told anyone to cut people off. Here's what I do instead. First, ground before the call, and again after. Before the family dinner, before the meeting. Feet on the floor, roots going down. A grounded body borrows less from other people. Second, during. Keep asking one quiet question. Is this mine? If your shoulders climb while they talk, notice it, and let them drop. You can listen with love and still keep your feet on the ground. Third, after. Give it back to the earth. And this is the part most people skip, so here it is, as a practice.

Next time you come off a draining call, before you do anything else, take two minutes. Sit back. Let the chair hold you. Both feet on the floor. Feel the weight of you. Now notice where the conversation went. Shoulders? Chest? Stomach? Find the heaviness. Don't fix it yet. Just find it. And on a long breath out, hand it over. Down your arms, out of your palms, into the ground. The earth has held mountains for millions of years. Your Tuesday phone call is not too heavy for it. Then go and wash your hands. Cold water, slowly. And as you do, ask the water to take what isn't yours. Water is for cleansing. That's what it has always done. Two minutes. That's the difference between carrying their day home, and leaving it at the door. If you want one step further, this is what I do myself. A little salt by the bed at night, and I ask it to clear what isn't mine. In the shower, I ask the water to wash away the day. Small things. They work.

If this is you, the sensitive one, the one everyone leans on, I made my ten-day journey with you in mind. It's called The Nature Reset. And if you'd like someone to clear what you've been carrying for you, there's a link to book a gentle session too. In person, or from anywhere. Your sensitivity was never the problem.
